By mapping Tolkien's Middle-earth, you make Arda yours. Your playground for creativity and imagination.

Here we look at each The Lord of the Rings' chapters and ask how they relate to Fairy-Story or other genres. And how the chapter, or section, relates to myth.

Tolkien's secret to success

Middle-earth & The Lord of the Rings

Middle-earth is Perilous. A realm of magic and mystery, yet very much in sync with the human condition.

I desire closer consideration of the art Tolkien employed so as to gain a deeper appreciation of his genius. In a letter to his friend, Father Robert Murray, Ronald admitted that “I have exposed my heart to be shot at” (Letter 142). That was written in December of '53. The Fellowship of the Ring was published in July 1954. And in the foreword to the Second Edition of The Lord of the Rings, he observed, “As a guide I had only my own feelings for what is appealing or moving…”. Is it any wonder that Tolkien felt vulnerable when the first part of his massive novel was on the verge of publication? Time has proven his opus was in tune with the hopes and desires of countless folk.
